Bryce NP

Last night I camped at a primitive BLM campground outside of Capital Reef NP in the Dixie Nat’l Forest. This morning I drove through some of the most extreem country I have ever seen. The road to Bryce from follows the ridge of a mountain for a few miles between Boulder and Escalante, UT known as the Devils Backbone. The road is on top of the ridge, no guardrails, and 1000 ft straight down on BOTH sides. It even unerved me a little.

Tonight I am staying at Bryce. I will do some hiking tomorrow and catch up on cleaning. Outside of the park is all built up with all sorts of touristry things. I found a laundry and also an honest to goodness shower place- not that I need it or anything;)

I would probably have cried, “Let’s go back to Cuba!” I have a fear of heights, and could not do a road like that. But Bryce is pretty.

Were you not with the family when we explored Bryce and Zion one year? I guess not; it was Daryl and Donnie who hiked down a trail that the ranger, said could not be done without Crampons, poles, and all kinds of hiking gear. They had on shorts and sneakers, and came strolling out after dark, when they were planning a rescue mission for the next day. They were unconcerned, when they told how they jumped over crevasses, and slid at times down slippery slopes. It really proved that “God protects children and idiots”, and I’m not entirely sure which we all were.

That was in Glacier National Park in Washington if I recall Mom.

Oops, Glacier is in Montana. It was Olympic National Park I think which is in Washington.

Thanks, that sounds right. It was a scary time for Dad and me, but, as I remember you both enjoyed it and weren’t worried.
